Reasons We Oppose the Farmers Branch “Immigration Ordinances”
- Immigration issues should be handled by the federal government. Our time and hard-earned dollars should be spent working on our community’s most pressing needs, rather than defending unconstitutional municipal immigration ordinances. Immigration is not a local issue. Ask your legislator to push for comprehensive federal immigration reform today!
- Make the right kind of headlines. The immigration ordinances proposed in Farmers Branch only work to divide the community. We’ve all seen the images on the news – people screaming at each other, saying hateful things to one another. This is not the city we know and love. Let’s return Farmers Branch to a community of caring citizens.
- Diversity is a lesson to share in the community – and classroom. Send a message to future generations that this community celebrates diversity. It’s important. Just listen to Dr. Charles Cole, Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Assistant Superintendent of schools, “Our district represents the nation and the world. We are more and more of a diverse society. We can’t isolate ourselves from the rest of the world. That is an advantage for our children to grow up in a world that they will live in.”
- Opposing municipal immigration ordinances does not mean you support illegal immigration. We do not endorse illegal immigration, but we believe these municipal immigration ordinances hurt the community. We want immigration reform, but believe it should come from the federal level.
- Listen to leadership. A wide range of elected officials are urging against immigration reform at the local level. Political leaders such as Gov. Rick Perry, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and Former President George W. Bush have taken a stand against immigration policies at the local level. Instead, they support a bi-partisan, national plan for immigration reform.
- Tell the world the real story of Farmers Branch. People across the state and even nation now view Farmers Branch as a divided, torn community. Headlines scream and portray our community as one that is fractured. Opposing these municipal immigration ordinances can help return Farmers Branch to the way it once was – recognized as a place that celebrates understanding, values and neighborly ways.
