That's Our Point!

In May of 2006, the Farmers Branch City Council created the Branch Revitalization Task Force – a committee charged with assessing the city’s needs and ways the city could become “more attractive for retail and residential development and redevelopment.”

Members included:
Ed Bonneau, Chairman
Gene Bledsoe, Real Estate/Marketing
Jeff Brand, Development
Ben Cunningham, Banking
Pat Haggerty, Commercial Real Estate
RL Lemke, Development
Tim Scott, Marketing

In September 2006, this group sent a letter to the Farmers Branch City Council about their concerns with local illegal immigration policy.

What did the letter say? You’ll have to read it to believe it. Here are some of the highlights:

“From the standpoint of businesspersons and of members of the Task Force charged with promoting redevelopment, revitalization, and a positive city image, the Task Force wishes to express their concerns. Their concerns are that the coverage the media has afforded this topic has presented a negative portrayal of the City of Farmers Branch, most especially to the business community.

They are concerned that the City’s image could be further impacted, and thus detract from certain opportunities the Task Force is developing. They are concerned that the City has been painted as divisive and unsafe, where property values and quality of schools are declining, and crime rates are increasing.

They report that they have received negative feedback from corporations looking to locate or to do business in Farmers Branch because of the recent media attention. They are concerned that a very large corporate headquarters lease may have been delayed and may actually be withdrawn as a direct result of the [immigration issue] discussions.

They are concerned that even though the City may not hear directly from businesses, that some looking to locate here or perhaps those already here will choose to locate elsewhere, simply because in this competitive corporate climate, business cannot afford the additional risk of being identified with a community or environment that connotes any hint of negative publicity.”
